Cornish cycling recognised at British Cycling Annual Awards
On Saturday 4th February the British Cycling Annual Awards, sponsored by Leigh Day & Co, returned to Birmingham’s Hilton Metropole Hotel where over 500 people gathered to celebrate the continued growth and success of the sport awards which were presented over the course of the evening to volunteers, national and world champions.
British Cycling Chief Executive Ian Drake commented, ‘It’s been another fantastic year for our sport from grassroots to elite and it’s always a pleasure to be able to reflect and celebrate this at the Awards Dinner.’
‘Importantly it’s also an opportunity to recognise those who’ve not only achieved great things on the bike, but in particular shine the spotlight on the volunteers and officials without whom our sport wouldn’t be able to continue to grow and thrive. It’s their hard work and dedication which will be more important than ever this year, when a home Games will undoubtedly inspire even more people to take to their bikes.’
Cornish cycling was proudly represented at the event with Len Pascoe receiving recognition for years of hard work and commitment to the sport and in particular at this event, for his contribution as an event official. I was also very proud to receive an award in recognition of my contribution to cycling as a club coach at One and All Cycling.

As I have mentioned in previous blog posts One and All Cycling is an amazing organisation which aims to support all of its members whatever their cycling aims and aspirations. Most recently the club launched its One and All Youth Academy which provides coaching for all U18 riders at each stage of their development pathways.
With this structure in place I hope that within the next couple of years we will have some of our Youth riders attending the Annual Awards to pick up their national trophies and team prizes!
Cycling in Britain, the South West and right here in Cornwall has a real buzz about it right now and it’s up to us as competitors, coaches, officials, volunteers and supporters to build on this. I urge anyone that has a passion for the sport to get involved in whatever way they can to help encourage and develop the next generation of cycling stars, but most importantly to experience the satisfaction and pride of knowing that you have done your bit.
With Mark Cavendish and Lars-Petter Nordhaug taking Team Sky’s first wins of the season today in Qatar and Mallorca respectively, the London Track World Cup Event just over a week away, the World BMX Championships being held in Birmingham this year, not to mention the Olympic Games itself and the numerous other national and international cycling events this year it’s going to be a bumper year for the sport and a great time to be involved!
‘Life should have no limits’ so get out there and get involved!
